Do you know that Anzac Day is also commemorated in Northern France?

Anzac stands for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. It refers to the troops from Oceania who fought alongside the British during World War I. Anzac Day is held every year on April 25 in Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands and Niue. It commemorates two major WWI battles: Gallipoli (1915) and Villers-Bretonneux (1918).

Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux

  • The Battle of Gallipoli, on April 25, 1915, took place in Turkey. It was a painful defeat, with 8,141 Australians killed.
  • Three years later, during the night of April 24 to 25, 1918, the town of Villers-Bretonneux—occupied by German forces—was retaken by Australian troops in a decisive victory.
